Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve never climbed before. Do you cater for beginners and what else do I need to know?

Allow approximately 2 hours for your first visit to Extreme Edge. All newcomers receive a free orientation session covering safety and belaying. For the ClimbZone automatic belay walls the orientation is on arrival, but for our Extreme Edge walls these sessions are run every hour (e.g. 11:00am, 12:00pm). You will also need to bring a partner over 14 to climb/belay with. On occasion we have single climbers looking for partners but that’s not always guaranteed. We have over 200 climbs  ranging from 8.5 to 15 metres high, built for every level of ability.

What is belaying?

Belaying is the art of holding the other end of the rope while the climber climbs. The belayer is the person on the ground who controls the rope for the climber and lowers them when they are ready to come back down to the ground. All belayers must be over 14 years old.

What should I wear to climb?

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move. Dress according to the outside temperature as the environment inside the gym is not climate controlled and will vary only a few degrees from the outside

temperature. Running shoes are fine, although you can also rent proper climbing shoes from us.

Are there age restrictions?

Extreme Edge offers a thrilling experience for climbers of all ages and ability levels from the age of 3 years onwards. For our Extreme Edge sports climbing walls, we do however require all belayers (the person who holds the rope to keep the climber safe) to be at least 14 years old.

What if I don't own any climbing equipment?

Not a problem. You can hire all the equipment required from Extreme Edge including harnesses, shoes, and chalk bags.

Will there be staff members on hand to belay if I come in by myself?

Not usually. We have a large bouldering area for customers who attend Extreme Edge alone. Generally, it’s often possible to find other people in the centre to climb with. Alternatively, browse the ClimbZone section of our website for details on our fully automatic belay climbs.

Is there a charge for spectators?

No, there is only a charge for those who will be climbing. Spectators and helpers are admitted for free.

Does climbing provide a good workout?

Climbing is one of the best workouts around. You’ll build strength and flexibility while burning calories. Because you are pulling and pushing your own body weight, you gain strength in a natural, healthy way. Plus it's easy to stay motivated because climbing is so much fun!

What types of payment do you accept at Extreme Edge?

We accept cash, eftpos, Visa and Mastercard. We also take cheques by arrangement.

Do we need to make a booking?

If you are coming in a group of 6 or more and require a safety orientation session, then you need to book in advance.

Do you have food and drinks available?

Yes, snack foods are available to purchase onsite, as well as hot and cold drinks.

If we come for the day can we leave to eat and come back?

Yes. Our entrance fees are based on a day pass. Simply let a member of staff know on your way out that you plan to come back that day and you’ll be re-admitted.

Is there a place to eat inside if you bring a picnic lunch?

Yes. We have plenty of tables and chairs inside the centre so feel free to bring refreshments and snacks, however, on busy days these fill up fast.

Can I use my own belay device, rather than the gym's Gri-Gris on the top rope climbs?

Unfortunately, not. We require that you use our Gri-Gris to belay. You will receive instruction on how to use them safely by our staff.

Are there any special requirements for 'lead climbing' at Extreme Edge?

If it's your first time lead climbing at an Extreme Edge centre then we require you to be issued with a Lead Licence by one of our primary staff. For this you will undergo a brief lead assessment, which normally takes a maximum of 10 minutes and only costs $10. Upon completion you will be issued a lead licence appropriate for your level of ability.

May I use my own rope for lead routes?

Once you have been issued a Lead Licence tag then you can use your own rope for lead routes., subject to the condition of the rope. Alternatively, we may be able to provide you with one on a first-in-first served basis at a hire charge of $4.
